How bad is racism among gays and lesbians in North America?

Quite a few GLBT people of color have told me it’s pretty bad. What do you think?

PS: I’m not gay, but I have gay, lesbian and FTM transsexual friends.

i come from california and it is pretty bad. ( i’m not gay either but i also have some who are) we are constantly using the word “gay” in a negative connotation. It really doesnt help that the church is really anti-gay. It mostly depends where you go. Like if you go to San F. then your frinds will fit in.. also in hollywood too.

GLBT people of color (POC’S) often face discrimination from white gays based on variances in gender expression and class. GLBT , particularly black gay males, tend to express their gender as more feminine than white gay males, and white gay culture often exeplifies masculinity, and particularly white masculinity as the ideal for desirability. That is why you see the prevalence of “Bears”, “Leather Jocks”, and “Bodybuilders” in the white gay community. Black gay communities are often composed mostly of femme black men who have sex with bisexual, masculine black men. The “femmes” are seen as gay or woman-like, and are often penetrated anally by the “straight” bisexual men (who often have females for their main sexual partners.) during sex. White males often top and bottom for each other. Black gay men often have much higher instances of HIV contraction than white gay men. White gays are much more likely to have higher incomes and education levels than black gays. White gays often look with disdain for black gays as “queens”, while idealizing and desiring athletic, masculine white gay men.
